Meadowbank Chardonnay 2019

RRP$50

Tasmania, AUS

Chardonnay. Love it or hate it, it is definitely here to stay and, when you see wines like this, it is easy to see why. This is unmistakably a Chardonnay, but somehow manages to be a great crowd pleaser while not making any compromises. I've said this before and I will say it many times again, great wines don't demand attention - they quietly slip in and make themselves at home. This is definitely one of those wines. It doesn't demand, it offers.

A consistent, pale straw yellow, the perfume of this wine just leaps out of the glass and hits you. Lemon wax comes first, with ruby grapefruit, almond milk and the oddly specific scent of vanilla ice cream which is just starting to melt. Behind this, as the wine opens up with some time, some toast comes through, as well as cashew and Pine Lime Splice. Crushed rock too. The aroma alone makes me think this would be a hit with kids who grew up in the 90s. Nostalgia aplenty. As far as palate goes, this covers a lot of bases. Soft pineapple tartness, with white peach, white cherry, lemon juice, grapefruit zest and ripe nectarine. There is a lot of acid here for a Chardonnay (maybe too much for some), but this works well to counterbalance the lush creaminess. This is such a refreshing, summery wine - a little bit tropical, a little bit serious and very approachable. Complicated but clean. This is definitely the kind of Chardonnay which would make anyone happy, whether you like buttery or clean, Old or New World. Drink it and be merry.

Rating ★★★★★

Have it with? Man, go nuts. I had this with lobster gnocchi but this is such a food friendly wine. Creamy sauces would just as good as grilled haloumi with fresh lemon.

Classic, weird or funky? Classic to its core.
